About
Kelsey is an illustrator and storyteller working in paint and clay. Her work focuses on worldbuilding and storytelling by immersing viewers in playful atmospheres full of color, messy paintbrush strokes, and curious creatures. She spends her time biking, hiking, taking her cat on year-round walks, and talking to her plants. Ask her about bears.
Statement
I design whimsical fabricated universes full of vibrant color. My work involves a series of landscapes painted in acrylic and oil depicting a playful atmosphere where creatures, plants, and other inhabitants interact with each other. Accompanying these illustrations are small ceramic figurines of the peculiar life forms that roam the space.
Working in clay reminds me of the feeling of making little neighborhoods in dirt during my childhood. Working on a canvas allows me to play with various mediums to build on my worlds in a two-dimensional space. Both give me a place to be messy and work intuitively, while still requiring a bit of patience in order to build skill.
Pursuits in my studio include pop-up books expressing my mixed emotions towards the many rooms I grew up in, paintings of surreal yet comforting worlds where I can mentally escape in times of distress, and three-dimensional clay creatures mirroring the mythical creatures I would have scribbled as a kid.
